Why Bother With A Diamond Certificate?
Diamond certificates are like a tax-book that goes along with a car and they should be issued by a reputable diamond grading laboratory.
This laboratory cannot be influenced by external pressure, or by the person who owns the diamond, to make the diamond certificate appear better than it actually is.
The Portfolio of Fine Diamonds uses the most respected diamond grading laboratories including HRD, GIA, IGI and AnchorCert by the Birmingham Assay Office. These laboratories have built up their reputations over many years and are highly respected within the diamond trade.
The diamond certificate will endorse what the jewellers is telling you about the diamond engagement ring you are viewing. The certificate is like a hallmark that you would see on a piece of gold jewellery – it guarantees the quality of the diamond is what you have been told.
One important thing to note. A diamond certificate does not necessarily tell you how beautiful a stone is, it backs up all the other credentials a stone will have.
The Diamond Lab of HRD Antwerp was founded in 1976 to meet the growing demand for reliable diamond certificates or grading reports. It’s the largest diamond lab in the world to conform to the rules for grading polished diamonds set by the International Diamond Council. These rules have been approved by the World Federation of Diamond Bourses and the International Diamond Manufacturers Association, the industry’s two leading representative bodies.
Furthermore, in 1996, the Diamond Lab became the first diamond grading facility worldwide to be officially accredited according to the stringent international standards of NBN EN ISO/IEC 17025, specifically designed for laboratories by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) was established in 1931 and is the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, coloured stones, and pearls. Some famous diamonds have been graded by GIA including the Hope Diamond (45.52 carats), the Steinmetz Pink (59.60 carats), the Taylor-Burton (69.42 carats), the Allnatt (101.29 carats), the De Beers Millennium Star (203.04 carats), the Centenary (273.85 carats), and the Incomparable (407.48 carats).
GIA is the creator of the revolutionary 4Cs of diamond value (carat, colour, clarity, and cut). It is also the birthplace of the International Diamond Grading System™. Today, GIA’s D-Z colour-grading scale, Flawless–I3 clarity-grading scale and Excellent-to-Poor cut-grading scale are recognized by virtually every professional jeweler and savvy diamond buyer in the world.
IGI is established in Antwerp, New York, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Bangkok, Tokyo, Dubai, Toronto, Los Angeles, Tel Aviv and Cavalese, and is the world’s largest independent gem certification and appraisal institute and is renowned for its quality services, extensive experience and know-how.
IGI, the oldest institute of its kind in Antwerp, was founded in 1975 and along with its sister laboratories is one of the leading gemological institutions worldwide.
Presently, a staff of just three has grown to over 450 professionals dedicated to a standard of excellence second to none. Today IGI issues more than 1 Million reports a year.
