RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
At Portfolio we know and love diamonds, and we understand for many buying a diamond is a leap into the unknown, so to help you along here are a few hints and tips to bear in mind...First and foremost: THERE ARE NO RULES! The most important thing is you have decided it's time to let her know how much you love her, and that is something to celebrate and enjoy.
HOW MUCH DO I SPEND?
It's maybe not very romantic talking about prices, but it has to be done. There are many different theories about what is the correct amount to spend, but there really are no hard and fast rules. Spend whatever you like and can realistically afford. If you are shopping together you SHOULD discuss and set a budget before you venture out. Look at portfolioofinediamonds.com where you can reserve a ring to view at a showroom of your choice. That way you both know the price band you are working with, and so will the sales advisor – so no awkward moments!
It may go against all your knight-in-shining-armour romantic instincts, but in the majority of cases it is best to involve your girlfriend in the decision making process. You can both have lot of fun trying rings together, and you will get to see her face light up when she finally see's THE ONE.
But, if you are determined to sweep her off her feet with a surprise ring you need to do some serious research! Take a look at the jewellery she already wears. Does she prefer modern or traditional? Does she tend to wear silver or gold? What does she say about other people's engagement rings? You can also consult with her (trusted) female relatives and friends, who should be able to steer you in the right direction.
You will also need to try and gauge her finger size. If she wears a dress ring on the third finger of her left hand, slip it on to your little finger and make a mental note of where it slides down to. We can then take the size from that. Generally, if a ring needs to be sized again there is no problem & no visible sign it has been altered.
DOES SIZE MATTER?
Remember, a big diamond will not necessarily make it more valuable than a smaller stone. A larger stone with visible inclusions and a hint of yellow will be less expensive that a smaller, well cut diamond with perfect colour and clarity.
HOW DO I KNOW I AM GETTING VALUE FOR MONEY?
Before you hit the shops, do some research on the four c's: colour, cut, clarity and carat. This will give you an idea of what you are looking for, and ensure you know a little about diamonds, so you are comfortable with what you are looking at. At portfolioofinediamonds.com the science is carefully explained HERE (make clickable), and our advisors are also available for online chat and telephone queries.
Also make sure you buy a certificated stone. It is vital your diamond is certificated, it is your guarantee of quality awarded by an independent laboratory. Some laboratories are not as accurate as others (there are some that Portfolio of Fine Diamonds avoid completely), so do be cautious even when a stone is deemed to be "certificated". Portfolio of Fine Diamonds only deal with the best laboratories; the GIA, IGI, HRD and Birmingham Assay Office Anchor Cert. Even though we have fully qualified gemmologists working in-house, we always leave the final say up to the laboratories. If you don't buy a stone that is certified by a good laboratory, you run a huge risk of overpaying, as it is easy to exaggerate the quality of a stone.
We think we've covered just about everything, but if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to contact us. The details of Portfolio of Fine Diamonds stockists are below.
